The Nature of Winter Birding

February 26, 2021 @ 4:30 am - 6:30 am

Preregister here: https://forms.gle/odsneso88GRoAswG6

Do you love being outside and enjoy watching wildlife, but wouldn’t consider yourself a “birder”? Are you curious about what birds are around in winter and how they survive the season? Then join us on this guided walk along the trails of Lake George Regional Park, East, to discover the nature of birdwatching! Along the way we’ll learn how to identify common winter birds by sight and sound, discover fascinating avian adaptations, and get introduced to the tools of the trade such as binoculars and field guides. And even if we don’t see bunches of birds, the simple act of looking increases awareness and enjoyment of the world around you–guaranteed!

Dress warmly in layers and bring your own binoculars and field guides, if you have them. A few pairs of binoculars are available to borrow and can be reserved upon registration. This walk will be at leisurely pace with several stops but may cover up to two miles on varying terrain. If the snow is deep, we’ll have the option to use snowshoes provided by Skowhegan Outdoors. Registration is limited to 12 participants so please be sure to sign up in advance.

More about Melissa: Melissa Lowe has a passion for all wildlife, but loves that birds are present in any landscape during any season, making them an accessible and rewarding way to explore the natural world. She is a life-long environmental educator and has directed and led field-based programs for a variety of organizations including Hawk Watch International, Manomet, and Mass Audubon. Melissa strives to make all of her programs inviting and fun, offering participants new insight, appreciation, and, hopefully, the inspiration to learn more. She and her husband have been coming to the Skowhegan area for the past 15 years and Melissa can often be found wandering around in the local woods with her dogs or gorging on all the region’s good food and beer! Lake George is among her most favorite places in Maine.
