NEW Space for Youth
Guided Outdoor Programming
Community Gear Lending Library
Skowhegan Outdoors Basecamp, 65 Water St. (riverside) is CLOSED until January, 2025. We'll see you soon!
The upward momentum and growth of the Skowhegan Outdoors program have prompted our organization to move into a larger, more accessible, and visible space in downtown Skowhegan at 65 Water Street, a two-story historic building in the heart of the commercial district and adjacent to the Kennebec River. We are transforming the 3,000-square-foot, river-adjacent half of the first floor into a community gathering place from which Skowhegan Outdoors will expand our gear library and host free outdoor-focused programs.
We are thrilled to have a space large enough to house our gear and for AmeriCorps members to host and facilitate free indoor programs in addition to outdoor adventures. During the warmer months, we'll host programming on the outdoor deck overlooking the future Skowhegan River Park (skowheganriverpark.com).
The Basecamp will offer the following benefits to the community:
- Easily accessible and visible home for Main Street Skowhegan's existing gear library with more than 200 items for community members to borrow!
- Walk-in gear lending services and expanded hours
- Outdoor recreation hub, providing a central location for outdoor clinics and workshops
- Low-cost bike and ski maintenance services
- A well-stocked resource library, including local trail info and area maps
- Welcoming place where folks can come together and share a common love for the outdoors
We're already planning for:
- Bike repair and maintenance training (targeting area youth to encourage careers in the outdoors)
- Cross-country ski tune-up clinics
- Knot-tying and fly-tying workshops
- Outdoor-themed film screenings
- Youth engagement activities
- Outsources trainings
- Wellness programming for businesses & organizations
- Gear consignment
Through increased exposure in the heart of downtown Skowhegan and a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, our new location will not only bolster our ability to directly serve regional residents via free programming and gear, but it will also provide an important third space for the community and become the hub of outdoor recreation in Somerset County. Over time, we expect this space to become a place where people can meet, talk, learn from one another, develop friendships and find mentors, and build a strong and supportive community around outdoor adventure and recreation.
The opportunities this space will provide for the residents of our region are endless, and we are so excited to offer a place for bringing our community together around outdoor recreation.
